Arrow Engineering Adapts with Working Remotely to Keep Project Work Going.

Impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are far reaching with very few left unaffected. Our business, our people, and our clients are no exception. During these unprecedented times, we remain focused on what matters most – doing our part to stop the spread of COVID-19, the well-being of our employees, maintaining operational resilience, and supporting our clients. Our entire leadership team is actively monitoring the situation and is supporting our employees and the operations to make agile and decisive decisions.

We are a business of people and their safety is our priority. All of our engineers, designers, and administrative staff are working remotely from home to help prevent infection. Arrow was quick to implement this early on and are using internal infrastructure networks (VPN), SKYPE and Office 365 applications to ensure teams can communicate and file share with ease. Our teams are still working to meet with our clients (virtually) and support project work, while respecting the guidelines put in place by the governments and the World Health Organization.

We are proud of our team for facing this challenging situation with resiliency and adaptability. We are all committed to doing the best we can. Facing these critical times can only be done when we all come together and do our part as corporations, governments and individuals.

We will overcome this challenge together.

Do not hesitate to reach out to your Arrow contact or project manager, or contact our general number and speak to the receptionist who can direct your call.

The Pilgrims Hospice Society has worked hard to bring their dream to reality. In the summer of 2019, a new Hospice home development broke ground in the heart of a residential community in Edmonton. This is an exciting time for the Pilgrims group as more and more people are able to choose an exceptional, community-based place to rest their heads for the final time.

Arrow Engineering was a part of this important project, completing the mechanical engineering design. As big supporters, we are happy to share the amazing and heart-warming video the Hospice Society has put together to share their impact on the residents and families they serve.

Local engineering firm celebrates 13 years of success and marks its 6000th project―despite challenging times.

EDMONTON – As Edmonton, and all of Alberta, are faced with challenging economic times, one local company still has reason to celebrate. Arrow Engineering, founded in Edmonton by three local Edmontonians, opened their engineering consulting business 13 years ago and they have officially booked their 6000th project as of July 31, 2019.

Despite the variable market, Arrow has seen an average annual growth rate of over 23% since inception, growing to be the largest buildings engineering group in Edmonton and one of the largest in Alberta.

“Like most companies, we feel the impacts of today’s economy,” explains Paul Burdett, Senior Vice President and Co-founder. He continues “…[but] over the last 13 years we have grown as an organization and built solid relationships with clients based on service and value.”

Since 2006, in addition to a branch office in Saskatoon, Arrow has expanded to include electrical, structural, civil, and most recently, geotechnical engineering services.

CEO and President, Greg Burghardt explains, “we focus on our strengths and strive to provide our clients with optimized designs to support the success of their projects. That is how we’ve stayed successful during these challenging times.”

Burghardt has almost 30 years in the construction industry and sits on the board for both the Edmonton Construction Association (ECA) and the Consulting Engineers of Alberta (CEA) where he works to improve the construction industry for the next generation. He is passionate about growth and development in our city and across our country.

“It is my personal goal to provide a great career experience for as many great people as possible,” explains Burghardt, “having a culture that encourages the ongoing development of continuous improvement ideas makes us different and inspires positive change. We believe our people are the secret to our success, and we are proud to have consistently high engagement levels and an award-winning culture.”

Arrow Engineering is among many other grass-roots, local Edmonton companies that continue to help grow and positively shape our business community. Like many, they are optimistic for the future of Alberta and Canada.

In 2018, Reggie Nicolas joined our Arrow team. Bringing over 18 years of industry experience and fostering a passion for sustainable builds, Reggie was a qualified fit to be the Principal, Senior Engineer of our mechanical group. He is a positive contributor to the collaborative design team environment and applies a proactive approach to the development and delivery of projects, making him a valuable asset to our team.

Reggie started his career in California immediately after receiving his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Alberta. He went on to achieve over 13 certifications and designations in just 10 years. Reggie considers himself to be a lifelong learner and servant leader. He takes pride in sharing his knowledge and experiences with his colleagues, friends and family.

Reggie’s experience includes projects of varying sizes and complexity including projects for Institutional/Educational, Healthcare, Sports + Recreation, Leisure, Office/Retail/Commercial, Arts + Entertainment, Research/Laboratories, Data Centers, Multi-use Residential and Light industrial. Several of these projects were designed utilizing LEED and/or Green Globes Programs.
He stays invested in his passions of green build initiatives by always keeping up to date with industry trends and changes. Reggie is highly experienced in the design of many renewable and sustainable technologies including Solar Thermal, Solar Wall, Fuel Cell, Wind, Co-Generation, Drain Heat Recovery, Grey Water Systems, Geothermal and Air/Water/Refrigerant Heat Recovery.

A self-professed “Excel Jedi Master”, Reggie is calculated and organized but is never one to shy away from a good time. Aside from work, he loves to cook and is a BBQ enthusiast. We’re incredibly grateful to have Reggie on the Arrow team and look forward to working with him for many years to come.

Last month we asked our employees to give us feedback by completing the anonymous survey by the Zweig Group. We are excited to share that Arrow is recognized again this year as one of the Best Firms to Work For!

Arrow placed 26th for our firm size; and placed in the top 100 in Canada and the US for multi-discipline firms based on our workplace practices, employee benefits, employee retention and engagement, communication, and more.  Our employees unanimously agreed that Arrow qualifies for this award and went even further to say they’d recommend Arrow to a friend. That speaks volumes for our organization and the employee focused culture we strive to maintain.

Our success is driven by our employees.

Robert Prybysh, Arrow’s Chief Engineer, has successfully completed his PhD at the University of Alberta. The title of his degree is Doctor of Philosophy, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Construction Engineering and Management.

Robert completed his PhD in the space of six years and one month on a part-time basis. He is grateful for the support and understanding of his family through the night courses, long periods of study, and preparing his thesis. He is also pleased to have received support in the form of time off from Arrow Engineering in order to complete his teaching and study requirements, and the moral support of his Arrow colleagues.

Why a PhD?

In addition to a belief in lifelong learning, Robert wanted to volunteer with the National Research Council. However, the academic requirements to do so were usually a minimum of a doctorate degree. He also noted that other engineering firms generally had chief engineers who had doctorates and wanted to ensure that Arrow had a Chief Engineer with the same credentials.

What was your thesis about?

His thesis title was “Performance and Cost Analysis of Utilizing Potable Water as a Hydronic Medium in Multi-unit Residential Buildings”. Robert was interested in this topic because while the possibility of using potable water to heat or cool buildings was a hot one in the 1970’s, once the energy crisis ended interest in these systems weakened. Robert looked at the main factors that could impede widespread adoption of these systems, including the taste of the water and the efficiency of these systems.

What were your key learning takeaways?

In addition to the practical lessons learned while studying and writing his thesis, Robert took courses with Alberta Health Services which included a segment about the ethics of health research, which was fascinating to him. Additionally, he learned how to question studies properly by digging into the data and background research.

Robert is a big believer in lifelong learning and does not plan to stop with this latest milestone. Law school is next, not to become a lawyer, but to better understand the legal aspects of codes and the safety act. He will also continue supporting professors at the University of Alberta with their research.

Recognized as a great place to be, again!

Once again, Arrow’s outstanding culture and employee relations is being recognized. We are among 50 Canadian companies to achieve the Employee Recommended Workplace award for 2019 for our outstanding standards for health and wellness (physical, mental, work and life) as reported by our employees.

Achieving this award is a reminder of our commitment to our people. We focus on hiring and inspiring great team members in their pursuit of excellence.

“Our people are our power.” Alyssa Lamy, Arrow Human Resource Manager explains, “we are proud to hire great people. Our team is growing; and it is important to continue to support a culture of innovation, mentorship, and fun. This is a great place to work and we continue to be recognized for it by our staff.”

We offer employees opportunities for professional and personal growth. We understand the importance of harmony between our work and home lives and we strive to make work a place we all enjoy. It is a rewarding feeling to know our staff think so too.

Designing facilities and buildings for our community is of utmost importance. On February 8, our team’s hard work and dedication was recognized at the Consulting Engineers of Alberta (CEA) Showcase Awards Gala. We were awarded the Small Firm-Big Impact, Award of Merit for the CASA Center project.

Arrow was brought in for support with the design and construction management of this new facility in Edmonton. When designing the new layout, both the mechanical and electrical engineering departments considered the needs of the CASA Foundation, but also those of the children and families who would spend time in the building.

We are proud to apply our skills and abilities to support the development of essential facilities to support our community.

For more details visit the CASA project page.

CASA Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Health provides mental health services for infants, children, adolescents, and their families in the Edmonton, Alberta area.
