Variable Frequency Drive (VFD)

A Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) system controls the rotational speed of an AC (alternating current) electric motor by controlling the frequency of the electrical power supplied to the motor.

VFD driven motors have useful applications for varying fan and pump speeds when energy conservation is crucial in air handler and hydronic systems. VFD’s are also known as Adjustable-Frequency Drives (AFD), Variable-Speed Drives (VSD), AC drives, microdrives, inverter drives and VVVF (Variable Voltage Variable Frequency) drives.
