Sustainable Design

More than two-thirds of an average city’s greenhouse gas emissions are thought to be generated by buildings—a reduction in these emissions can be achieved through careful planning and design, building and operation.

At Arrow, we understand the strategies that are proven in the field of sustainable building design. As such, we utilize new and existing technologies to deliver solutions that are conducive to the intended operation of the building, and it’s occupants. More importantly, we are committed to identifying opportunities where energy and resource conservation may exist; we understand the social, environmental, and economical implications of this responsibility for the benefit of our community.

Our attention toward energy management is evidenced by our active participation in several leading industry organizations, including the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers Inc. (ASHRAE), Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC), and our ongoing participation in learning opportunities and workshops on “Green Technology” including those sponsored by NRC on energy efficient design. This includes energy modelling and a current understanding of LEED® Certification requirements; several members of our team are LEED® accredited.

Geothermal systems are a fast emerging technology; our first introduction to geothermal was in 1999 for an office / shop facility in Edmonton. Since that time, we have utilized geothermal technology on several projects, with the largest being an 80,000 SF office building for the Alberta Motor Association (AMA) Kingsway Branch, in Edmonton. And, we’ve been involved with energy efficient building systems that have utilized other technologies such as waste oil heating units, passive solar, and wood pellet fired hot water heating boiler systems.

As industry leaders in developing, designing, and engineering innovative engineering systems we can both substantially reduce operating costs and extend equipment life cycles, resulting in real cost benefits while simultaneously achieving responsible environmental stewardship.

We have an established record in the delivery of green buildings, including many projects which are targeted for LEED® Certification, Built Green, and Green Globes. In fact, our standard multi-unit residential design philosophy, subject to modification for client and site requirements, achieves a Platinum level of points under the Built Green Canada program on a ratio-point basis.
